CODOC: Cooperation of Doctoral Education between Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe (2010-2012)

This project, supported by Erasmus Mundus Action 3, examines trends in doctoral education in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America. The point of departure is that, while the crucial importance of doctorates for economies and societies has been acknowledged and international exchange and cooperation in this area is growing, universities from the global South tend to be underrepresented in the related debates.

Partners include the Centre for Development Research, University of Bonn, Germany; the Observatory on EU-Latin America Relations (OBREAL), Spain; Karolinska Institutet, Sweden; the Inter American Organisation for Higher Education (OUI), Canada; the Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA), South Africa and the ASEAN University Network (AUN), Thailand.

Europe-Africa Quality Connect (2010-2012)

This project will follow up the Erasmus Mundus project Access to Success: Fostering Trust and Exchange between Europe and Africa (2008-2010), in which the European University Association (EUA) and the Association African Universities (AAU) have been leading partners. One concrete recommendation that has surfaced is the need to further bi-regional discussions on institutional development and quality assurance.

The project will be based on the methodology of the Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP), an independent EUA service that stresses institutional responsibility in defining quality and the means to achieve it. Over two decades, it has developed into a distinct European approach for quality enhancement and strategic development. The project will facilitate institutional evaluations of five African universities in different regions of sub-Saharan Africa and will also organise workshops and a dissemination conference.

Partners: European University Association, Association of African Universities, the Irish Universities Quality Baord (IUQB), the University of Aveiro. The Africa Chapter of the Erasmus Mundus Alumni Association is an associated partner.

ALFA PUENTES (2011-2013)

Building Capacity of University Associations in fostering Latin American regional integration

This three-year ALFA project will enhance the capacity of Latin American (LA) university associations to:
1) advise and support their members on institutional higher education modernisation and internationalisation
2) engage in dialogue and act collectively at national and regional policy levels
3) engage internationally through structured dialogue and cooperation with sister organisations in the LA sub-regions and beyond, and with European partners.

It will specifically support three sub-regional initiatives (Mercosur, Andean Community, Central America/ Mexico) as building blocks for wider regional convergence. The sub-regional initiatives focus on actions that sub-regional university associations have prioritised, primarily regarding the reform of teaching and learning, quality assurance (QA) and internationalisation. European partners will be engaged in the sub-regional initiatives and transversally across the project.

The project consortium consists of more than 20 university associations from Latin America and Europe. The project management team consists of the European University Association (EUA), Observatorio de las Relaciones Unión Europea América Latina (OBREAL), Asociación Grupo Santander (AGS), Asociación Colombiana de Universidades (ASCUN),  Asociación de Universidades "Grupo Montevideo" (AUGM), Consejo Superior Universitario Centroamericano (CSUCA), and Universidad Veracruzana.

Past Projects

Access to Success: Fostering Trust and Exchange between Europe and Africa

This Erasmus Mundus Action 4 project discussed under several workshops several topics of mutual interest for African and European universities, and drew conclusions in a White Paper on how actors at different levels – universities, university organisations, donor organisations and governments of both regions could enhance exchange and cooperation for the purpose of capacity building partnerships and with regards to the grand challenges they face.

EU-Asia Higher Education Platform

The EU-Asia Higher Education Platform (EAHEP) was an initiative under the EC’s Asia Link Programme developed and implemented by EUA in cooperation with the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the NUFFIC with the aim of promoting cooperation in higher education between Asian and European countries.

The project consisted of a series of thematic, multi-stakeholder events across Asia and Europe, including round tables, workshops, European higher education fairs and symposia. Themes explored were university partnerships, student/faculty mobility, university governance and management, developing graduate studies, curriculum development and bi-regional cooperation projects, and the external impacts of the Bologna Process.
